Darlene Brown, a senior TA consultant at American Institutes for Research (AIR), serves as the REL Southwest lead for regional needs assessment and collaboration/coordination. In this role, Dr. Brown's responsibilities include overseeing all needs-assessment activities and coordinating collaboration activities for the REL Southwest. In her previous work at SEDL, which merged with AIR, she provided oversight of SEDL-related REL Southeast activities/products in partnership with Florida State University and managed and facilitated the outreach, relationship-building, communication structures, and logistical supports that are essential for the development of charter school research alliances in the states of Georgia and South Carolina.
Dr. Brown has more than 31 years of experience in the field of education. Her areas of expertise include charter schools, leadership, teacher preparation, and school improvement and turnaround. Her doctoral work focused on principal leadership. She holds a bachelor’s degree as a speech, language, and hearing specialist in speech education from the University of Louisiana at Monroe (formerly Northeast Louisiana University) as well as a master's degree in educational administration and a Ph.D. in educational leadership from the University of New Orleans, Louisiana.
