Edward Hynes Charter School recognized by CAP Journal
The Fall 2014 edition of CAP Journal (the journal of the Canadian Association of Principals) profiled charter school success Edward Hynes Charter School in the article “On Becoming a Successful School.” Staff at Edward Hynes Charter School in New Orleans are members of the REL Southwest Louisiana Charter Schools Research Alliance.
In 2004, the Edward Hynes Charter School was built on the ruins of a school devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The school leadership took advantage of the opportunity to rebuild and dedicated the new school to a mission of “Quality education shaping leaders for a changing world.” Characteristics of the school that make it especially successful include a climate that allows local control, strong leadership from its principal, a “fairly flat organizational structure” that empowers teachers, community involvement, and parent choice.
Darlene Brown, PhD, liaison for the Louisiana Charter Schools Research Alliance was a founding board member and served for eight years. Dr. Brown now serves as an emeritus board member.
