REL Southwest Welcomes New Governing Board Members, Director, Tours Hynes Charter School in New Orleans

May 2–4, 2016, REL Southwest held our Spring Governing Board meeting in New Orleans and visited award-winning Edward Hynes Charter School. Two new members have joined the Governing Board, Dr. Kenneth Heydrick and Dr. Brian Riedlinger. We also thanked outgoing REL Southwest Director Dr. Vicki Dimock Dr. Vicki Dimock for her leadership over the past four years and welcomed new Director Dr. Michael Vaden-Kiernan.

The staff at Edward Hynes Charter School treated board members and staff to a tour through the school’s grounds and introduced us to the innovative programs and practices producing so much success at the school. Hynes is a diverse school with a distributed leadership model, an emphasis on family and community engagement, a system of goal setting, and robust supports for teachers, including creative and solutions teams, and a positive, encouraging atmosphere. The results show. At Hynes, 94 percent of students are at or above reading level.
